In church, I was known as a really good singer.  Back in the day when “special music” was a must have during communion, I would be asked on numerous occasions to sing a solo. Singing my heart out was, in my mind, the only authentic way of giving my all in worship. When I was in choir, I set a “high” challenge for myself to be the loudest soprano “A” at the end of the anthem. Yes, I was a bit proud of my high notes.

Now that God has transitioned me into being a worship leader and with a little bit of “seasoned” humility tattooed in my mind, I want to encourage other strong singers who are either worship leaders or on a worship team to sing for all you’re worth, not with your ability or your volume front and center, but with your whole heart.

God desires a humble heart first and foremost before talent. I have learned that it is an honor to lead, scaling back in order for there to be “one” church voice, beautifully worshiping in unity together.

Let the Holy Spirit increase, while you decrease. God will give you other opportunities to shine with the voice He has entrusted to you. When we are leading in worship on Sundays or not just on Sundays, it is about connecting others to Him, not about how talented we are.
