Recently I was at a service where things went wild. People were crying, shouting out, singing with more volume than I ever thought possible. The band were on stage, playing I-don’t-know-what, and every once in a while the whole place would erupt. It was powerful, powerful stuff.

What was the key that unlocked all that passion? Well, it was nothing more profound or complicated than two bits of cardboard and a sharpie. Have a look at this video and you’ll get the idea…

Now, the church service I was at was not the one featured in this clip above, but it helps get the idea across. As people shuffled to the front of the stage and showed how God had transformed them, it was impossible not to want to sing and shout about it.

So here’s this week’s pickle: would you give it a go? It might be messy (actually, it certainly will be messy) and you won’t have anything like the usual control that you have, but why not try? Give people some advance warning - whether it’s a post on the church facebook page a couple of days or just an explanation at the start of the service - so that you can get people thinking about the key ways in which God has changed them. Then stand back, join in with the rest of the congregation as you marvel at how good our God is. Then let the Holy Spirit do the rest.

the Friday Pickle - does it matter if the mainstream knows our songs?

There was a time when the only real films that Christians got excited about were the ones that offended us. You don’t see that so much these days. Perhaps we’ve mellowed. Perhaps the studios have stopped trying to antagonise us....

Lift Your Voice - Song Devotional

For many of us, it is uncomfortable to address issues like privilege because we feel like whatever we have, we have earned it. And when our own hard-earned life is questioned, we become hard of heart, defensive, and ultimately blind to our privilege.

Your Love Is Our Favorite Song - Song Devotional

I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations… Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD… O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O LORD, with your faithfulness all around you?
